3 Reasons Why 2020 Was A Good Year
Did you make the
most out of 2020?
Many
people are suffering due to the pandemic this year. History has repeated itself
and has written itself down for future reference. However, there are but a few
who were able to acquire skills and tactics in handling the food shortage, low
income, and loss of employment. These skills have been there for a lifetime, and
surprisingly many people do not want to talk about them.
Writing
is a skill
usually overlooked by many. Let me tell you a short story.
In the beginning, I used to work in the “Juakali” industry. Every morning started
off with a simple prayer for the family and me. By then I was single and
living in a land of extreme temperatures during the day. I woke and went to the
unfinished buildings, I would talk to the foreman for a chance, which I usually
got. The pay was five dollars on a good day or sometimes three dollars when you
had nothing to lose. I would go to class in college by then, that is how I found
myself in the land of “Masaku”, a man who foresaw the colonization of our country
sitting on a small chair on a hill way back before independence. At first,
after I was unable to pay for my basic needs in college, I looked for more ways
to support myself, every day. I may have done a ton of jobs, from 2013, but I will
never forget about the first formal employment, two years ago.
In
2018, I started working at a supermarket store as a sales representative. I learned
about customer service and got interested in customer satisfaction. I began
teaching myself how to do articles and scriptwriting as a way of releasing the
guilt of failure. Slowly, I started writing, and finally, I became a tutor. I was
able to support my weak salary as a sales assistance, and mostly, the payment
surpassed my full-time employment salary. I was only writing as a part-time
thing.
The
beginning of this year, some of the employees were laid off, salaries cut and
many unpredictable things happened at the workplace. We started gagging
ourselves with masks that made it extremely terrible to breathe. We did it to
save our lives anyway. Washing hands and burning my skin with sanitizers. I sometimes
thought the sanitizers were counterfeit enough to burn out my skin. I experienced
deep pressure especially from customers, asking me what the hell was going on. My
answer was, “I was hoping you could tell me, customer.”
This
brings me to the three reasons why my year was good.
1.
Extra Income
While
working in the supermarket, I was able to share stories with the customers and
they too had ways of conquering the hard times. Most of them ran businesses
from home, while others had online jobs already. Those that caught my attention
were the ones who loved to tell stories. I learned how to tell a story about
businesses and it became invaluable to many of the clients I began working
with. I got a content creation contract and began earning extra income, still working full-time employment, which I later found the courage to resign from.
2.
Start-Up Opportunities
Being
employed made me into somebody else. I would follow instructions and wait for
plans from my boss. It took me a while to realize that some of the plans he was
creating were not the best of options for their businesses. I tried to forward
my concerns but as it stands, in Kenya, it is not the best of places to try and
change the system of any job opportunity. One may need more than a pair of brains
and a caring heart to make things happen. Therefore, I decided to use my salary
as a capital investment for my own plans. I discovered it is easier to work for
yourself than for somebody else. Not the effort measure of it, but the motivational
aspect of working. I work best when I’m happy, therefore, let me work for myself.
Limitless opportunities emerged and
I experienced a lifestyle that only existed in my dreams. I was able to conduct
research before deciding on any venture. I am able to handle customer engagement
online, something that is rare but vital for any business. What makes me
happier is my happy customers.
It
is easily ignored that our emotional control counts in every single decision we
make. Whether it is the food we feel like eating, the kind of girl we want, or
the places we feel like living in. our emotional stability highly affects our
smallest decisions. These small decisions affect our major outcomes. Therefore,
our whole life is dependent on how we feel about things. I will share more on
that as we head toward 2021. One of my major resolutions every year, every
month and every day is to make sure that I remain strong inside no matter what
may come. I achieved a deep sense of being this year, seeing people run around
in fear. At the beginning of the year, as I was working in the supermarket, I saw
most of my mentors and friends, by then, being afraid and unstable because the “world
was coming to an end”. I stayed still since my father always taught me to never
fear death, it is normal to die. What is not normal is for the body to live
forever. How we live forever, is by doing good for others, because stories will
be told, and our words will remain. I was able to be confident and I lived
through waiting, protecting myself and those nearby, respecting the social
distance, and sanitizing, although the chemicals burnt my sensitive skin. I stood
strong inside and here we are. Strong together for another pandemic until we
find where we truly should be. That wholly depends on how you feel about
everything.
